Oxford Consortium for Human Rights Workshop

July 5-11, 2026

What is the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights (OCHR)?

The Oxford Consortium for Human Rights (OCHR) aims to educate and inspire undergraduate students to pursue careers dedicated to issues of global ethics, international law, development, humanitarian action, and human rights.

What is the OCHR Workshop?

This workshop gives undergraduate students the opportunity to meet, and to learn from, experts, practitioners, and organizations that are committed to human rights, humanitarian action, and global justice, in a small group setting.

When and where is the OCHR Workshop held?

The workshop will take place at Oxford University in the UK. The workshop will start the evening of Sunday, July 5, 2026 and conclude the morning of Saturday, July 11.

What is involved in attending the OCHR Workshop?

Students are expected to read a packet of materials – which will provide a basis for discussion throughout the workshop – in advance. Together, the CLA students who are chosen to attend will reflect on the workshop materials and think about how they might act as agents of change in their local environments, where “local” might refer to a community, city, country, or region. Students will then have the opportunity to apply what they have learned at the workshop and to refine their presentation, before presenting it to the workshop group on the last day.

The selected students will be accompanied at the Workshop by a professor from the Philosophy Department.

What are the benefits of attending?

Upon completing the workshops, students are awarded a certificate that they can list on their CVs or resumés. The benefits that accrue students are many: forming supportive communities with students from around the globe, networking with speakers and organizations, and developing professional and mentorship relationships.

What is the cost of attending?

The Philosophy Department (through the generosity of the Ira Lawrence Fund) will fund airfare, room and board, and tuition for two philosophy majors; and one additional CLA undergraduate will be funded by the Dean’s office. Students will be responsible for any personal, discretionary spending.

Who is eligible to apply?

This program is open to all philosophy majors who are juniors or seniors, and to other juniors and seniors in CLA.

What is the application process?

The application, including the recommendation form, is due Friday, February 27, 2026, by 5 p.m.

Please ask a professor, with whom you have taken a course or an independent study relevant to human rights, to fill out the attached, confidential recommendation form. If you are a philosophy major or minor, please ask a philosophy professor.

The application and recommendation form should be emailed to Prof. Lee-Ann Chae at leeannchae@temple.edu. Please ask your recommender to email their form directly to Prof. Chae, to preserve confidentiality. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application by Friday, March 13.
